Slate Stone: Applications and Design Ideas

Where slate's layered structure becomes an architectural asset.

Slate Stone: Applications and Design Ideas

Slate's defining quality is its cleft: it splits into fine layers, so a stacked slate wall carries dozens of shadow lines per square metre. Used at scale, that texture does the work of ornament.

It performs well underfoot. Low porosity and a naturally textured surface make it a sound choice for terraces, thresholds and pool surrounds.

Tonally, slate spans charcoal through rust, green and silver. Specify whether you want a single-tone selection or a multi-tone blend — the difference is significant across a large elevation.

Pair slate with warm timber, lime plaster or brass. Against those materials its coolness becomes deliberate rather than severe.
