Natural Pebbles for Landscape Design
Grading, depth and containment — the three details that make pebbles look considered.
Pebbles are usually specified too small and laid too thin. A 20–40 mm grade at 50 mm depth over a permeable membrane holds its appearance far better than a fine grade that scatters underfoot.
Containment matters. A defined edge — steel, stone kerb or a set paving course — is what separates a designed gravel margin from spill.
Around water features, choose a grade that stays put under flow and remember that tone deepens considerably when wet. Always assess a wet sample.
Mixing two grades of the same stone, larger toward boulders and smaller toward planting, gives a natural gradient that a single grade cannot.
