How to Maintain Outdoor Natural Stone

A simple seasonal routine keeps external stone looking well for decades.

Sweep regularly and rinse with clean water. Most staining begins as organic debris left in place through a wet season.

Use pH-neutral cleaners. Acidic products etch limestone; strong alkalis can dull sandstone over repeated use.

Avoid high-pressure washing at close range — it opens the surface and, on riven stone, removes the cleft detail. Keep the lance back and the pressure moderate.

Reapply a breathable impregnating sealer according to exposure, typically every three to five years in outdoor conditions. Never use a film-forming sealer outdoors.
