How to Design a Premium Stone Garden
Restraint, repetition and a small number of well-chosen materials.
The most convincing stone gardens use fewer materials than expected — often one paving stone, one walling stone and one loose aggregate, repeated with discipline.
Give the stone room. Generous unplanted areas let the material's variation register; over-planting reduces stone to a background.
Introduce one solid element — a bench, a monolithic table, a basin — as an anchor. A single heavy piece gives the garden a centre of gravity.
Light it low and warm. Grazing light across a textured wall after dusk reveals a completely different reading of the same surface.
